A comprehensive background check may<br \/>\nconsist of prior employment verification, professional reference checks, and<br \/>\neducation confirmation, a criminal background check must be obtained.<\/p>\n<p>(Updated)<\/p>\n<p>21 st Century Public Academy shall require background checks, based upon<br \/>\nfingerprint identification, of all prospective employees.<br \/>\nEmployees shall, as a condition of employment and at the expense of the<br \/>\nemployee, submit to and clear a background check every two years after their<br \/>\ninitial hire date.<br \/>\nAll contractors who may have unsupervised access to students must submit<br \/>\nevidence of current back ground check clearance.<br \/>\n21 st Century Public Academy shall require background checks, based upon<br \/>\nfingerprint identification of all volunteers who may have unsupervised access to<br \/>\nstudents. Background check clearance of volunteers who may have supervised<br \/>\naccess to students shall be valid for two years at which time the volunteer shall,<br \/>\nat the volunteer\u2019s expense, submit to and clear a new background check.<br \/>\nAdditionally, employees are required to self-report, to a designated administrator<br \/>\nany known arrest, charge and\/or conviction of criminal offense within in 5 days of<br \/>\nconviction.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Religious Instruction<\/p>\n<p>21 st Century Public Academy shall strive to maintain a neutral stance in matters<br \/>\ninvolving religion. 21 st Century Public Academy shall adhere to the following<br \/>\nguidelines regarding religion and the instructional day:<br \/>\n\uf0b7 The school year calendar shall be planned to avoid conflict with religious<br \/>\nholidays.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 In case of conflict, students shall be allowed excused absences to observe<br \/>\nreligious holidays.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 The sacred literature of all faiths may be studied only for its historical,<br \/>\nartistic, cultural, literary or other secular importance.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Religious exhibits, music or display of religious objects or symbols may be<br \/>\npermissible only if they are used as learning materials in these studies.<\/p>\n<p>School facilities may be used by religious groups outside of instructional hours or<br \/>\nwhen such use will not conflict or interfere with the school program in accordance<br \/>\nwith Board of Education policy and administrative procedural directive.<br \/>\n21 st Century Public Academy shall not conduct any invocations, benedictions, or<br \/>\nformal prayers at any district-sponsored activities but will respect outside entities<br \/>\nmoments of reflection as long as it does not interfere with the scheduled<br \/>\nactivities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Administration of Medications at School (Consistent with the policies and procedures of<br \/>\nthe Contracted Medical Provided for Nursing Services.)<br \/>\nThe American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on School Health States that children<br \/>\nare often able to attend regular school programs as a result of the effectiveness of<br \/>\nmedications in the treatment of illnesses and chronic disabilities. It has also been<br \/>\nproven that students who are able to be medicated at school attain more regular<br \/>\nattendance and increase their ability to achieve their optimum educational and social<br \/>\npotential.<br \/>\nDEFINITION: a medication is any substance that is ingested, injected, inhaled or used<br \/>\ntopically in the diagnosis, treatment and\/or the prevention of disease. This included<br \/>\nprescription drugs, over-the-counter and non-prescription drugs.<br \/>\nMedications may be authorized by health care providers who are licensed by the state<br \/>\nof New Mexico to prescribe drugs. Medication authorizations are acceptable from<br \/>\nlicensed Medical doctors, Nurse Practitioners, Osteopathic Physicians and Physician\u2019s<br \/>\nAssistants.<br \/>\nTherefore, the following procedures will be followed when it is absolutely necessary for<br \/>\na student to take medications during school hours.<br \/>\nPolicy and Procedure of Administration of Medications at School<br \/>\n\uf0b7 The physician and the parent\/guardian will submit written authorization for the<br \/>\nmedication to be given during school hours. The information provided in the<br \/>\nwritten authorization should match the labeling information on the medication<br \/>\ncontainer. This will help ensure that the medication actually being taken is<br \/>\nconsistent with that authorized.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 The parent\/guardian and physician will submit written consent for a student to<br \/>\nself-administer his\/her own medication with supervision. A licensed school nurse<br \/>\nwill administer medication to those students who are unable to administer their<br \/>\nown medication.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 A Charter School Nurse contractor\/designated health assistant will NOT assist<br \/>\nwith medication administration without a completed \u201cAuthorization to Administer<br \/>\nMedication\u201d form. If a request to administer medication is sent o school without<br \/>\nsuch authorization the following must be done:<br \/>\n-The licensed school nurse will be notified immediately of the situation<br \/>\n-If the licensed school nurse is unavailable, call Nursing Services for assistance.<br \/>\n-Only a licensed school nurse may telephone the physician for a (temporary)<br \/>\nverbal medication order.<br \/>\n-Such verbal authorization is valid for five (5) days.<br \/>\n-The nurse requests that the doctor send a written authorization to the school.<\/p>\n<p>-The parent\/guardian may come to school and give medication until a verbal or<br \/>\nwritten authorization can be secured by the licensed school nurse.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 In life-threatening emergency situation such as an anaphylactic episode, severe<br \/>\nasthma reaction or a diabetic reaction, a non-medically licensed school employee<br \/>\nmay administer oral, inhalation or parenteral (injectable) medication to the<br \/>\nstudent. This person will be trained by a licensed school nurse. A signed<br \/>\nParental Indemnity Agreement document (Asthma Action Plan, Allergy Action<br \/>\nPlan, etc.) will be requested from the parent\/guardian.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Non \u2013medically licensed school employees will be trained to follow a specific<br \/>\nprocedure for assisted self-administration of medication that ensures students<br \/>\nreceive their prescribed medication in a safe manner. This training will be<br \/>\nprovided by the licensed school nurse.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Students will be carefully instructed on how to take their medication at school.<br \/>\nThe methods and plan of administration will be a coordinate effort between the<br \/>\nstudent\/parent\/guardian, licensed school nurse and other school employees who<br \/>\nwill assist and supervise in the self-administration of medication.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Each student will be required to have each medication in a pharmacy labeled<br \/>\ncontainer. Note: The pharmacy label does not serve as a physician\u2019s<br \/>\nauthorization. The information provided on the written authorization must match<br \/>\nthe pharmacy label.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 Medications will be stored within a locked medication cabinet in the health office.<br \/>\nExceptions to this rule will be noted on the medication authorization form and the<br \/>\nHealth Management Plan and will pertain to medication that must be stored in a<br \/>\nrefrigerator or those carried by the student.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 The Nursing Department will determine the procedure for recording the time and<br \/>\ndate the medication is to be given for longer than ten (10 school days. A copy<br \/>\nwill be filed with the health record, in the medication log, given and discussed<br \/>\nwith the parent and the appropriate school staff.<br \/>\n\uf0b7 The site principal\/administration is responsible to provide the equipment and<br \/>\nmaterials necessary for the safe administration and documentation of these<br \/>\nprocedures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Background Checks (Current) Employee Background Check Prior to becoming an employee of 21 st Century Public Academy, a job-related background check will be conducted.
