Extended Care Program

We know how difficult the last few months have been for parents as they navigate the rocky waters of working, teaching their children from home, and maintaining their sanity while the world faced a pandemic that changed so many lives. As school comes back into session for the 2020-2021 school year, the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History would like to offer parents and guardians of children in Kindergarten through 7th grade an opportunity to obtain childcare in our new in-person Extended Care Program.

Starting on Tuesday, September 8, and likely to run through the school year, the museum will accept a limited number of K-7th grade students each day for full-day extended learning programs. These programs will run daily, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm each day. Students can be registered for one or multiple days, and each day is a fee of $50. Museum members receive a 10% discount. Advance online registration is required to obtain a spot.

This in-person Extended Care Program at the Smithsonian Affiliated National Museum of Nuclear Science & History will offer a balance between online distance learning with the child’s school, STEM specific curriculum and activities provided by the museum, and fun physical activities each day. With access to the nine-acre outdoor exhibit area filled with airplanes and a shaded picnic area, students are sure to have a blast!

Students will be asked to bring their Google Access login information for their school assignments (or other login information if a different platform is used), lunch, snacks, a face mask to be worn at all times, and a refillable water bottle. Students are welcome to bring their own electronic device to do school work, but the museum is also able to provide an electronic device if necessary.

Each program will have a ratio of 1/5. Safety of the students and museum educators is of utmost importance. Safety protocols, including cleaning procedures, will be strictly enforced during all programs. All students will have their temperature taken upon arrival to the museum, and a curb-side drop-off and pick-up will be implemented for safety. More information on procedures and policies will be shared with each family before the registration date.
